BOARD OF ELECTIONS REFORM

The current election administration system has enabled party insiders to exercise virtually unchecked power to appoint leadership, hire and fire staff, and make critical decisions about elections behind closed doors. This status quo does not put voters’ needs first.

Improving boards of elections in New York can make the difference between equal access to the ballot for all, and unequal barriers to vote for too many. YOUTH

Our youth working group works to expand the right to vote to all young people and engage young people in our electoral process.

In 2022, the fight for polling sites on college campuses was victorious thanks in part to our activists.

Now, the youth working group is working to bring a novel CUNY/SUNY Empowerment Act to our state.

Students on college campuses seldom receive information about voter registration, election deadlines, polling locations, upcoming elections, and more. A new CUNY/SUNY Empowerment Act would ensure that every student has (in advance) the information needed to create a plan to vote.

RIGHTS RESTORATION

This working group focuses on full voting rights restoration for incarcerated people.

This bill would ensure that New York State restores full voting rights for incarcerated people by creating an affirmative right in the constitution entitling incarcerated people to vote in a correctional facility and deleting language excluding citizens from the vote.

Restoring voting rights to incarcerated people can strengthen both their ties to society and their commitment to the common good.

The right to vote is inherent to our democracy. We believe that voting rights should not stop at the front door of a prison.
